Karl Lagerfeld was born in 1938 in Hamburg. Educated in three languages, he was accepted into a french high school in 1952. He did not complete his secondary studies, however at the end of 1954 he won an international competition for amateurs from the International Wool Fashion Office, left school and began working as an assistant for Pierre Balmain in 1955.

Alongside his international carrier as a fashion designer and stylist, Lagerfeld began working as a professional photographer in 1987.
